Forgetting to Live

Betty’s humming is the best sound in the world when I’m baking. Even though I know I should feel harried and hurried, her gentle voice lulls me so my hands move with more precision and fewer mistakes. While I know I have to pick up the pace, I find that I am less bothered by the enormous workload when she is near.

Of course, that could also be because she is a wiz at baking.

“I still can’t believe you made all the double fudge cupcakes this morning before I got in. Why I didn’t get an assistant earlier is beyond me.”

Betty chortles into the mixing bowl while she adds the salt. “I’m glad to be up and moving. You know I’m no good sitting still.” She makes a muscle with her bicep. “See that? I think it’s gotten firmer since I started. It’s all that whipping.”

I nod, making my own muscle to display proudly. “That’s right. It’s work plus a workout.”

“With a cupcake at the end of the rainbow as a reward.”

We giggle together because we are our own taste testers. It is far and away the best part of the job.

Betty blows a kiss to Buttercream as she swims in the bowl on the counter, flicking her tail at us happily. “I think we’ll be finished with the cupcakes for Marianne’s birthday by the end of the day today. We can frost them tomorrow.”

I nod, checking our list on the fridge that we have of all the tasks that need to be done this week. It’s a simple way to keep us in sync, but quite effective. “I love that the Live Forever Club is handling the actual party planning of the whole thing. I want to be more involved. I mean, Marianne is my best friend. But the orders are crazy this week.” Just as they were last week, and the week before. “I’m glad you’re here. Honestly, if you hadn’t come along, I might be sitting in the corner of this kitchen, huddled in a ball while crying.”

Betty tsks me. “We can’t have that. Karen asked Rip if she could borrow the dunk tank that we keep for the summer festivals. I don’t know who she plans on conning into that thing, but it’s sure to be a fun day. People get crazy when there’s a dunk tank.”

“I’ll bet. I stopped by Dwight’s house this morning to ask him if he could dress up for Marianne’s party, so the kids will have that as entertainment, too.”

Betty chortles. “Oh, Dwight. I’ve known him since he was a baby. Sweet boy.”

“He seems nice. He mentioned his dad is coming to visit this week. He was excited about that.”

Betty’s smile falters. “Ah. Kurt doesn’t stay long when he comes back to Sweetwater Falls to see his son.”

“No? Does he not like it here?”

“I don’t think that’s it.” Her voice lowers. “Kurt’s wife died a good five years ago in Sweetwater Falls. She was barely in the ground before he was packed up and gone.
